General Electric U25C

Like its 4 axle sibling, The 2500 horsepower U25C was General Electric's 6 axle entry for the domestic locomotive market introduced in 1962.  Conrail inherited 20 U25C from the Penn Central, which inherited them from the PRR.  Used heavily in the early years, all of these locomotives were retired by 1983.

Ex-PC U25C 6806 is the trailing unit on a westbound TrailVan train about to crest the summit of the Alleghenies inside the Allegheny Tunnel on  July 7, 1979.  So much in this scene has changed.  The New Portage Secondary coming in on the right was abandoned soon after this photo was taken.  The huge blowers visible near the portal of the tunnel, unused since steam days,  were removed around the same time. The Allegheny Tunnel is now double tracked after being enlarged to handle double stacks in the mid-1990's.  The original Gallitzin Tunnel (1870) to the right is now abandoned.
