EMD SD-7

Conrail's fleet of 2 SD-7's came from the Penn Central. These units were purchased by the PRR expressly for service on the Madison Incline, a steep 5+ % grade on a branch in Madison, Indiana.  After the branch was abandoned,  the units spent some time in Allentown, PA. before retirement in the early 1980's.

In the Summer of 1981, I caught both of Conrail's SD-7's on the same day on adjacent frames of film at the west end of Allentown Yard. Here is SD-7 6998.
Conrail SD-7 6999.  Note that Conrail could not paint the two locomotives identically. 6999's  can opener logo is shorter than the one on 6998.

EMD SD-9

Conrail inherited it's fleet of 25 SD-9's from the Penn Central.  All of these units were purchased by the PRR for service in the mountains of Pennsylvania in the mid-1950's.
