EMD SD-35

Like it's 4 axle counterpart, the SD-35 was powered by a turbocharged 16-cylinder 567B engine producing 2500 horsepower.  Conrail inherited its fleet of  52 SD-35's from the Penn Central and Jersey Central . 40 units came from PC (PRR, 1964)  and 12 units from the CNJ.  These units were retired in the mid-1980's along with the SD-45's, having been replaced by the SD-50's

A close up view of 6000.  It was not unheard of for railfans or railroad employees to remove the "paint out" of their pet road's or former employer's locomotives with a can of solvent. For example, the herald of the "Standard Railroad of the World", the PRR keystone, is fully exposed,  while the Penn Central name and "mating worms" logo remain hidden on the flanks of 6000.  Photo by Mike Szilagyi
