EMD SD40-2

All 165 EMD SD40-2's on the roster purchased by Conrail were delivered between 1977 and 1979. These 3000 horsepower six axle locomotives formed the backbone of heavy road freight fleet in the years Conrail struggled to profitability.

In 1994 and 1995, a fleet of SD40-2's were selected for use in the Altoona Helper Pool. The oldest units were chosen 6358-6383 (1977). These units are equipped with a feature called HelperLink. HelperLink allows pusher units to be uncoupled from a train without stopping. This saves an enormous amount of time and keeps the very busy Pittsburgh Line fluid.
