EMD SW-1001

Conrail inherited all 25 of its SW-1001 switchers from the Reading Company. These are thoroughly modern 1000 horsepower switchers delivered to the Reading in late 1973. These units tend to stay close their native territory in the eastern part of Conrail's system.

MU'ed SW-1001's 9400 and 9412 cross the 1855 Falls Bridge over the Schuylkill River on March 8, 1992. This bridge was built to handle the Reading's flood of coal traffic bound for the Port Richmond coal piers.
