General Electric B23-7

Conrail purchased 134 B23-7 locomotives in two orders from GE between 1977 and 1979. Originally these units were used in road freight and mineral service.  Now, these 2250 hp. units are seen in local and branch line service throughout the system.

 

Nearly new B23-7 2800 passes Valley Forge, Pa. Station in the Spring of 1979.  The cars belong to SEPTA commuters who ride the RDC's to Reading Terminal in Philadelphia.  This service was discontinued in 1983.     Photo by Mike Szilagyi
B23-7 1953 leads 3 siblings on an eastbound PP&L unit coal train downgrade on the Horseshoe Curve in July of 1980.
