Northwest Point

A coral rock ridge runs across the north part of the island.  Where the ridge meets the sea on the leeward side of the island is a 100 foot sea cliff.  I was impressed.  This is the first sea cliff I have ever seen.  We don't have any in New Jersey or Virginia where I go to the shore.

A view of Northwest Point from one of Salt Cay Divers' boats.  The seawall in the foreground is the harbor.
The view from the top of Northwest point looking south toward Mt Pleasant and the harbor.  The beach on the right is where you enter the water to snorkel Northwest Point.
The sunsets when from the top of the hill are spectacular.  On this day, we saw the "Green Flash".  Just as the tip of sun dips below the horizon on clear days in the tropics, the last sliver of the sun turns green.
Heike at Northwest point.

A few years ago someone found a cannon that at one time protected the harbor.  The cannon was mounted on a pedestal and a bench was built on top of the Northwest point cliff to form a pretty little park.  The views are fantastic.

After the sun set on the last day.  We saw a pod of dolphins feeding directly off of the point in front of us.  They stayed for about 15 minutes.  This is best picture I got.
On the last day, I could not dive.  But I really wanted to snorkel in front of the cliff at Northwest Point.  Here are the usual suspects a Blue Tang, Doctorfish, and a partially hidden French Grunt.  Note the healthy elkhorn coral in the background.
Just as I turned around to head back, I saw a big brown thing in the side window of my mask.  I turned to see a 6 ft. nurse shark only 10 feet away. HOLY SHIT! I took my last two pictures of it.
My new buddy cruising by looking for lunch.  Nurse sharks are completely  harmless.
