Pennsylvania--Calls Needed to Oppose Expanding Compulsory Attendance Age
Dear HSLDA members and friends:
Bad news! Yesterday House Bill 377 passed the Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee and was sent to the full Senate for consideration. This bill would lower the compulsory attendance age in Pennsylvania from 8 to 6 for school districts of the first class. House Bill 377 passed the House of Representatives in June of 2005.
Homeschooling families in Pennsylvania strongly opposed the bill and since that time it has remained dormant in the Senate Education Committee. Now, at the 11th hour, it has the momentum for quick passage by the Senate. Your calls are needed to stop this bad bill before it becomes law, perhaps even this week.
Since Philadelphia is the only school district of the first class in Pennsylvania at this time, it is the only school district that would be affected by this legislation. However, we are concerned that the next step the General Assembly will take is expanding this compulsory attendance requirement to all school districts in Pennsylvania.
HSLDA opposes any legislation lowering the compulsory attendance age because it further erodes parental rights in making decisions which affect the educational preparedness of their children.
ACTION REQUESTED:
1. Please contact your state senator with this message:
"Please vote against House Bill 377. This bill restricts a parent's right to choose when a child is ready for formal education. This bill will also waste taxpayer dollars, since there is nothing to indicate that early schooling results in any educational advantage for the child."
You can find the name and telephone number of your state senator by using HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=3376.
2. Please copy/paste/email this information to every family you know who is not a member of HSLDA and urge them to contact their own state senator with this same message.
BACKGROUND:
There is a qualified exemption in House Bill 377 for homeschooling parents whose children are between ages 6 and 8, in that they would not have to comply with the home education statute until their children reach the current compulsory attendance age of 8. However, these parents would still have to notify the local school district that they intend to provide their child's education between ages 6 and 8. How the state would determine that a parent is providing this education is yet to be determined.
The House Education Committee amended this bill to exempt from compulsory attendance children under 17 who have completed the graduation requirements of a home education program. While this amendment was favorable to homeschoolers, the primary purpose of the bill remains unacceptable.
Many education experts have concluded that beginning a child's formal education too early may actually result in burnout and poor scholastic performance later.
Lowering the compulsory attendance age erodes the authority of parents who are in the best position to determine when their child's formal education should begin. The bill would restrict parents' freedom to decide if their children are ready for school.
Another significant impact of expanding the compulsory attendance age would be an inevitable tax increase to pay for more classroom space and teachers to accommodate the additional students compelled to attend public school.

For more information on compulsory attendance, please see our memorandum at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=2051.

STOP U.N. Mandated New World Religion Curriculum
If the U.N. Earth Summiteers have their way, Johnny and Suzie will not be able to pledge allegiance to "one nation, under God," but they will pledge to "One World, under Gaia" - that is, Mother Earth. They will not be allowed to have the Ten Commandments or the Holy Bible in class, but could soon be bowing before the pagan "Ark of Hope," reading the "sacred" Temenos Books, and reverently intoning the text of the new UN Earth Charter.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors is but one of hundreds of organizations, schools, municipalities, and other entities that have signed on as supporters of this declaration of a new "global ethic" for the world.
According to the the Rockefeller-Gorbachev Earth Charter website, the Earth Council, UNESCO, and the Earth Charter Initiative folks already have many of the curriculum materials and programs prepared; in fact, they're already up and running in schools across the globe. Some American schools got an advance start on the rest of humanity with Charter activities, coinciding with the journey last year of the Ark and its contents to the UN in New York.
The Charter will soon be making its way to schools, city governments, state legislatures, teachers organizations, civic groups, professional associations, judges, and law schools. The aforementioned Global Judges Symposium concluded its summit activities by issuing the so-called Johannesburg Principles on the Rule of Law and Sustainable Development. "We recognize," it states, "the importance of ensuring that environmental law and law in the field of sustainable development feature prominently in academic curricula, legal studies and training at all levels, in particular among judges and others engaged in the judicial process."
Americans can make sure that that scheme does not work by informing themselves and their friends and neighbors about this blatantly diabolical and blasphemous deception.

Learn how to think Biblically, and transmit a Biblical worldview to your children.
In the HOME SCHOOL DIGEST, you'll find practical tips, simple suggestions and bold biblical challenges that make up an open forum for wrestling through the complex issues that affect home-schooling families. It won't all be roses. It won't all be thorns. Together, we'll tackle some rough topics that may unsettle you a bit, but will ultimately shore up the foundations of your convictions. We pray that the broad, yet uncompromising approach you'll find in the DIGEST will strengthen, encourage and equip you for the challenging task of homeschooling.
Massachusetts Department of Education employees described the details of homosexual sex to a group of high school students at a state-sponsored workshop on March 25 at Tufts.
Note to Parents: The news story at the first link below contains graphic information of a sexual nature. While this material is troublesome to us and will be to others, it is important to realize that the State of Massachusetts deems this information appropriate for teenagers as young 14.

Have you ever looked at the definition of the same word in different dictionaries and noticed that they differ? It could be because one dictionary is more up-to-date than the other and that it reflects the modern-day meaning of the word. Or, if the update dates are not far enough away from each other to make a difference, it could be because the editors chose to redefine the words according to their own beliefs or agenda.
I stumbled across this possibility when I looked up the words “conservative,” “liberal,” and “pedophilia” in two different dictionaries. The following is a comparison of the definitions of these words in the American Heritage Talking Dictionary, Version 4.0 (B0921) of 1995 and Webster’s NewWorld Dictionary, Second College Edition, 1986.
“Conservative” in the American Heritage Dictionary, 1995
The following is the definition of “conservative” in the American Heritage Dictionary:
con·ser·va·tive ( k…n-sûr“v…-t¹v) adj. 1. Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change. 2. Traditional or restrained in style: a conservative dark suit. 3. ** Do you see an “angle” presented in the synonyms? I notice a negative connotation (fossil, fuddy-duddy, old fogy, relic, square).

1. (n.) A person with liberal political opinions:
· progressive, left-winger, leftist, reformer, freethinker, latitudinarian, right-winger (antonym), conservative (antonym), rightist (antonym)
** Note that in the very first sentence of the definition, “free from bigotry,” the implication is that if you are not liberal, if you are conservative, you are a bigot! The rest of the definition is very positive regarding “liberal.”
“Liberal” in the Webster’s New World Dictionary, 1986
liberal ( l¹b“…r …l, lib“r…l) adj. [ME. < OFr. < L. liberalis < liber, free < IE. *leudhero-, belonging to the people, free < base *leudh-, to grow up, rise, whence G. leute, people, OE. leodan, to grow] 1. Orig., suitable for a freeman; not restricted: now only in LIBERAL ARTS, LIBERAL EDUCATION, etc. 2. giving freely; generous 3. Large or plentiful; ample; abundant [a liberal reward] 4. Not restricted to the literal meaning; not strict [a liberal interpretation of the Bible] 5. Tolerant of views differing from one’s own; broad-minded; specif., not orthodox or conventional 6. Of democratic or republican forms of government, as distinguished from monarchies, aristocracies, etc. 7. Favoring reform or progress, as in religion, education, etc.; specif., favoring political reforms tending toward democracy and personal freedom for the individual; progressive 8. [L-] designating or of a political party upholding liberal principles, esp. such a party in England or Canada 9. [Obs.] excessively free or indecorous in hebavior; licentious. –n 1. A person favoring liberalism 2. [L-] a member of a liberal political party, esp. that of England or Canada - lib`er al ly adv. –lib`er al ness n. SYN.-liberal implies tolerance of others’ views as well as open-mindedness to ideas that challenge tradition, established institutions, etc.; progressive, a relative term as opposed to reactionary or conservative, is applied to persons favoring progress and reform in politics, education, etc. and connotes an inclination to more direct action than liberal; advanced specifically implies a being ahead of the times, as in science, the arts, philosophy, etc.; radical implies a favoring of fundamental or extreme change, specifically of the social structure; left, originally referring to the position in legislatures of the seats occupied by parties holding such views, implies political liberalism or radicalism
**Note that in the Webster’s dictionary, which seems to reflect the conservative angle, “excessively free or indecorous in behavior; licentious” is placed in the middle of the definition, not placed in the front of the definition in the way that the seemingly liberal American Heritage dictionary placed “free from bigotry” in the first sentence of its definition of “liberal.” This seems more “fair” to me. Webster’s dictionary included a more conservative definition of “liberal” by including “indecorous” (lacking propriety or good taste) and “licentious” (lacking moral discipline or ignoring legal restraint, especially in sexual conduct).
** Are these differences a true indication of the change in our society, moving from conservative to liberal, right down to the “angle” presented in the definition itself? The following example is even more disturbing. Note how the older Webster’s definition for pedophilia states that it is abnormal, while the more modern American Heritage dictionary does not say that it is abnormal, therefore implying that it is ok.
pe do phil ia ( p¶”d… fil“¶…, -fil“y…) abnormal sexual desire in an adult for children.
ped·o·phil·i·a ( pµd”…-f¹l“¶-…, p ¶”d…-) n. 1. Sexual attraction felt by an adult toward a child or children. ped ”o·phil“i·ac ( -²k) adj. n.
** I’ve heard of history books being rewritten to erase faith-based facts and facts regarding minorities. Are dictionaries being rewritten so that children looking up “conservative” will be conditioned to see their parents, who label themselves “conservative,” to be a “fossil, fuddy-duddy, old fogy, relic, square” and wrong? Are dictionaries being rewritten so that our children, who use them, will be conditioned to think that pedophilia is normal and ok?
** World views are being infiltrated into text books and now into dictionaries! We must alert responsible parents to these facts so that they can educate their children at home before the children use these new books in the public schools (and possibly even private faith-based schools).
