The man, from the province of Konya, could not believe his ears when his dog's stomach started ringing. The dog had picked up the Nokia phone and swallowed it when his owner wasn't looking, reports the Anadolu news agency. The man thought a customer must have stolen the phone as he filled up their car with petrol. From The Morning Call -- November 9, 2004 Libertarian's tax defiance backed by others in party Not guilty plea entered for former candidate charged with evasion. By Elliot Grossman Of The Morning Call A few days after he was charged with income tax evasion, former congressional candidate Arthur Farnsworth is drawing support from fellow Libertarians who agree the income tax is wrong. Libertarians are calling Farnsworth's actions an example of civil disobedience because he acted in defiance of tax laws he believes are illegal. ''Libertarians have a long history of acting in defiance of laws that are unjust, unclear or patently wrong, and supporting others who do the same,'' said Perkasie resident Maurice Reeves, a Libertarian organizer. A federal grand jury charged Farnsworth last week with intentionally failing to pay more than $80,000 in income tax. At the government's request, he was jailed over the weekend. On Monday, a U.S. magistrate judge set bail at $100,000, allowing Farnsworth to go free if he posts 10 percent. The judge entered a not guilty plea for Farnsworth. Farnsworth, who ran for the 8th Congressional District, claims the U.S. Constitution does not give Congress power to impose an income tax. During the campaign, he was open about his tax dispute with the government, admitting he has not filed a tax return since 1998. Farnsworth, who lives in West Rockhill Township, received about 1 percent of the votes in the race won last week by Republican Michael Fitzpatrick. Farnsworth allegedly failed to pay tax on about $221,000 in income from 1998 to 2000. Farnsworth acted in the spirit of ''many great Americans,'' including those who staged the Boston Tea Party to protest British taxes, Reeves said. ''It is ironic to us that while we once honored those who fought against taxation as patriots, now we jail them and label them criminals,'' Reeves said. Though Libertarians advocate eliminating the income tax, they leave it up to individuals to decide whether to withhold their taxes, according to Reeves, a software developer in Philadelphia. Libertarians believe adults should make their own decisions about how to live. Farnsworth, 41, a township auditor, is his church's choir director and organist. He is treasurer of the Pennsylvania Libertarian Party. State party officials said, ''It is the hope of the Pennsylvania Libertarian Party that Mr. Farnsworth will be afforded due process of law and that his arrest will force our government to finally address the valid questions that he and thousands of others have posed. Bush. What horrid event awakened them? It was the presence of a big, bad Boogey Man named John Kerry. Boogey Man Kerry was a dreadful monster. He drank blood. He bit the heads off birds. He mutilated animals. He huffed and puffed and blew down houses. He pushed little old ladies down staircases. He played polo with human skulls. As a child, his favorite game was Kick The Cat. He was a heinous creature. However, Christians and conservatives can now go back to sleep, because the dreaded Boogey Man is gone. After all, snoozing is what Christians and conservatives do best. Their naps come in four year increments disturbed only every presidential election cycle by the pounding footsteps of the latest Democratic Boogey Man. And now that the Boogey Man is gone, they can all go back to beddy-bye. In the event, however, that a few Christians or conservatives are still only putting on their pajamas and have not yet quite made it back to the sack, let me tell you what you missed the last four years while you were unconscious: *Your Knight-In-Shining-Armor, G.W. Bush, superintended over the deaths of more than four million innocent, unborn babies and did nothing to stop the slaughter. *Your "anointed" leader increased federal funding for abortions at home and abroad to record levels. *Your "pro-family" president appointed numerous open homosexuals to high office within the federal government. *Your "conservative" president increased federal spending more than any administration, Republican or Democrat, in modern memory. *This "staunch defender of limited government" increased the size and scope of the federal government by pushing through Congress legislation creating federal police powers that can only be described as despotic and tyrannical. *Your "hero of conservatism" increased funding for virtually every Great Society program ever invented. He increased funding for the Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Legal Services Corporation, etc., etc. *This wonderful president who desires to keep America "safe and secure" proposed granting amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, all of whom are criminals and many of whom are potential terrorists. *Before you went to sleep four years ago, gasoline prices averaged less than $1.25 a gallon. When you recently got out of bed, did you happen to notice that due to Bush's energy policies, gas prices now exceed $2.00 a gallon? I could tell you much more of what you missed while you were sleeping, but it only might cause you to stay awake, and we must not let that happen. So, have a good four year nap and know that the Boogey Man is gone. I'm sure you'll wake up in time to chase away the next Democratic Boogey Man in 2008. Of course, we can't know how many more liberties we will lose and how many more unborn babies will be killed and how many more tax dollars our federal government will be spending by 2008. The native dog has been identified and will be destroyed after the incident, said to be the first of its kind at the resort. Mother Belinda Corke said the dingo entered the family's room on Friday morning and approached Scarlett, who was asleep on a bed. Georgia then positioned herself between her sister and the dingo and screamed at the top of her lungs. "She was very brave," she said. Mrs. Corke, who was in the bathroom, said when she rushed into the room she faced a mother's worse nightmare. "I must admit the first thing I thought of was Azaria Chamberlain," she said. "Even if it couldn't have taken her away, it could have quite easily dragged her off the bed on to the hard floor." Georgia's father, David, managed to shoo the native dog out of the room. Back home at Indooroopilly, Georgia said her she did not think twice before she put herself in between her sister and the dingo. "I just yelled out 'dingo' when Mummy and Daddy were in the bathroom," she said. Kingfisher Bay spokeswoman Kaye Bishop said she was surprised the dingo had entered the room. "We haven't had a report of one going into a room before -- this is something new for us," she said. OnlineArchive.org Use Permission Received Transplant surgeons move cancer patient's ovary into her own arm By Roger Highfield, Science Editor (Filed: 09/11/2004) http://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/11/09/wovary09.xml A woman of 29 being treated for cervical cancer had one of her ovaries removed and then implanted into her arm, doctors reported yesterday. The operation – the first successful "auto-transplant" of its kind – meant that the patient, from Surinam in South America, avoided being made menopausal by her radiation treatment. Dr Carina Hilders and a team at Leiden University, in the Netherlands, moved the woman's left ovary to her left arm at the same time that they attempted to remove the cancer by a full hysterectomy. After the five hour 20 minute operation the ovary in her arm - about the size of a table tennis ball - carried on secreting hormones into her blood in a normal monthly cycle, so she was not menopausal, the team reported yesterday in the journal Cancer. "This was very important for her quality of life," said Dr Hilders. "We showed that we could protect the ovary from damage, the first time this procedure has been done." Over the following year, the lump in her arm swelled and shrank in line with her hormone cycle, peaking in size when eggs were made. Dr Hilders said the ovary was implanted between muscles in the upper inner front region of her arm. "It did not discomfort her much, though she did feel it," she added. Her eggs could have been removed and been used to make her pregnant by IVF. But there was no attempt to retrieve eggs because cancer reoccurred a year later. It is understood that the patient, a mother of two, became homesick and returned to Surinam without completing her radiotherapy. She has since died. Dr Hilders said transplanting the whole ovary – with all its blood vessels – and attaching it to the blood vessels in the arm by using microsurgical methods guaranteed a good blood supply. Once reattached, the ovary regained the same shape and colour as before removal. French doctors conducted a similar operation on an 18-year-old in 1987 but there was a three month delay in performing the operation so that a prosthesis could create a space for the ovary in the arm. In a young patient, when tumour growth is aggressive, such a delay was unacceptable, said Dr Hilders.
