OnlineArchive.org Use Permission Received Treaty with UK Targets YOU and U.S. founders? Critics say terrorism agreement would suspend constitutional rights with no statute of limitations http://wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=38555 Posted: May 19, 2004 1:00 a.m. Eastern Critics say a new anti-terrorism treaty between the U.S. and the United Kingdom could conceivably result in Great Britain seizing the assets of dead enemies – like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. The treaty, forwarded April 19, 2004, by President Bush to the U.S. Senate for ratification, has generated little media attention and little controversy – probably due to the fact that it is an agreement between coalition partners in the war on terrorism. But some who have examined the small print see big problems with the new extradition treaty – saying it abrogates the constitutional rights of Americans accused of wrongdoing by Great Britain and threatens the estates of long-dead antagonists of the crown. Drafted by Attorney General John Ashcroft, the treaty is designed for "combating terrorism, organized crime, money laundering, and other offenses." But William Hughes, author of "Saying 'No' to the War Party," charges that under the treaty as written, the British could demand recompense from anyone in the U.S. who stood up to British law – living or dead. Hughes contends the property of the descendants of the founding fathers could theoretically be seized. "Such items and assets may be surrendered even if the extradition cannot be carried out due to the death ... of the person sought," states Article 16 of the treaty. Another critic, Professor Francis A. Boyle, a professor of international law at the University of Illinois, claims the treaty will "eliminate the political offense exception to any offense allegedly involving violence or weapons; transfer responsibility for determining whether the extradition request is politically motivated from the courts to the executive branch; allow for extradition even if no U.S. federal law is violated; and allow for provisional arrest and detention for 60 days upon request by the UK." Hughes states: "If all of this sounds like the Brits could wake up one morning and just arbitrarily charge an American citizen with a so-called 'extraditable offense,' on the flimsiest kind of evidence, you're right to think so. It also means that the accused, a citizen of this republic, would get no full judicial review of his extradition process by a federal judge, a federal appellant court, or the U.S. Supreme Court." He says once the treaty is approved by the Senate and signed by the president, "an American, will be at the mercy of an alien-based foreign government" with none of the usual constitutional protections. The treaty is currently sitting before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, chaired by Sen. Richard G. Lugar, R-Ind. Irish-American activists have expressed their concerns that the treaty might be designed to target activists working for Irish independence. In a letter from a coalition of Irish-American organizations earlier this month, the critics wrote: "Under the new treaty, as drafted, an extradition request from the British government could be received on one day and a target, regardless of citizenship or the merits of the extradition request, could be forcibly placed on a plane and deposited with the British security forces the very next day. These are the same security forces that presently stand accused of orchestrating collusive murders of its citizens in Northern Ireland for many years and who have successfully stonewalled calls for independent investigations of such misdeeds." The current treaty governing extradition between the U.S. and Britain was signed in London on June 8, 1972. It was amended by the supplementary treaty signed in Washington on June 25, 1985. ''There's no big Irish issue in the (presidential) campaign, but if this treaty goes through there will be," says Boyle. According to Boyle, the proposed treaty not only does away with the concept of a political-exception clause, it also removes the possibility of judicial review in extradition cases while exposing individuals, including U.S. citizens, to the threat of extradition to the United Kingdom based on "totally unfounded allegations." People, he told the Irish News, could be prosecuted for simply helping people involved in the situation in Northern Ireland. Boyle has written Lugar instructing him that had the treaty been in force back in the 1770s, America's founding fathers, including Washington and Jefferson, would have been "extradited to the British Crown for prosecution of their very revolutionary activities that founded the United States of America itself." But given that there is no statute of limitations and that asset forfeiture is a part of the treaty – even for dead targets – some have only half-jokingly suggested the estates of the founders could be endangered. The Departments of Justice and State argue in their correspondence with Lugar that provisions of the treaty are similar to those with Spain, South Africa, Poland, France and Lithuania. +++ ACTION: Contact Your Representatives: http://fp.users.fast.net/InfoQuest/government.htm#CONGRESS ==================== ==================== (4) Movie Review - ALERT - "Saved" OnlineArchive.org Use Permission Received Mandy Moore sells out Christians. Christian Reviewer Warns New Movie 'Saved' Makes Mockery of Faith By Jenni Parker May 18, 2004 http://headlines.agapepress.org/archive/5/182004c.asp (AgapePress) - A Christian film and television reviewer and pro-family advocate is warning moviegoers about a new film being marketed in the guise of a Christian teen comedy. But the media expert says audiences need to be aware that this film is not what it seems. The soon-to-be released movie Saved is a story purportedly about Christian teenagers, set at a fictional Christian high school and starring popular young actors such as Mandy Moore (A Walk to Remember, The Princess Diaries), McCaulay Culkin (Home Alone, Richie Rich), Jena Malone (Cold Mountain) and Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous). But far from being a family film or even an innocent teen comedy, some reviewers are pointing out that Saved may be the most offensively anti-Christian piece of Hollywood hype to hit theater screens in years. Christian Film & Television Commission founder Ted Baehr warns believers not to let themselves be fooled by some ads that tout the film as a lighthearted satire. He says the upcoming movie portrays Christians as hateful, uptight, bigots and ignorant gossips, and hypocrites. The film carries a PG-13 rating for sexual content, but to the Christian viewer, those scenes might be viewed as the tip of the iceberg. Baehr notes that even the best of the Christian characters in the story make for poor representatives of the faith. In one scene, the heroine (Malone) has a vision, in which she imagines "Jesus" is telling her to have sex with her boyfriend to "save him" after he announces he may be homosexual. She subsequently gets pregnant and is condemned and ostracized by a former friend (Moore) and the rest of their vicious and self-righteous classmates. At one point Moore's character promises to keep the pregnancy of her one-time best friend a secret; but then she takes the first opportunity to spread the news around the school in the form of a "prayer request." Then there is the heroine's boyfriend, who is sent to a care center and returns home with a homosexual partner (just in time to crash a school dance) and a fully confirmed commitment to his homosexual lifestyle. And all this while, the heroine's mother is depicted as carrying on an adulterous affair with the school's married principal, "Pastor Skip." Baehr, who publishes the pro-family Movieguide, described Saved in an Associated Press interview as a film that is downright hateful in its portrayal of Christians, and one that is likely to have a damaging impact on young believers. "A lot of Christian kids, especially the ones that they've been marketing this to, are going to come away with 'Christo-phobia, with anti-Christian attitudes -- you know, 'All those Christians are mean, horrible people' -- and it is not true," he says. And Baehr is not alone in his opinion. In a review for ChristianAnswers.net, contributor Jeremy Landes wrote that the film was obviously not made with a Christ-centered audience in mind. In fact, he contends, it is apparently designed to appeal to "Americans who, according to most polls, believe a God exists but can't agree on whether He has called them to live according to any standard. The heroes of the film (who challenge their hypocritical principal, parents, and classmates) acknowledge God with their lips, but they live according to their own desires and moral standards, not Christ's." Even some reviewers for secular publications have panned the film and criticized its mean-spirited Christian-bashing. Reviewer Ed Gonzalez of Slant magazine calls Saved "a film that sees only in black-and-white" and says the spectacle of its most vicious characters and their un-Christian behavior exists primarily "to mock a belief system" and "to promote anti-Christian resentment." Saved was directed by filmmaker Brian Dannelly and produced by singer-songwriter Michael Stipe of the alternative rock Band R.E.M. Stipe himself characterizes the movie in terms that leave little doubt about how those behind the film regard evangelical Christians. Quoted on an Internet movie site, Stipe compared Saved to "those monster vampire high school kind of movies, only here the monsters are Jesus-freak teenagers." Instead of going to see Saved, Ted Baehr suggests that moviegoers might want to check out Raising Helen. He says the latter film, although also rated PG-13 for some thematic issues dealing with teens, has a far more positive Christian message. +++ ACTION: Contact Mandy Moore and Pray for her! THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER OLD VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold. MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself! MODERN VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving. CBS, NBC, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so? Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper, and everybody cries when they sing, "It's Not Easy Being Green." Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing, "We shall overcome." Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake. Tom Daschle & John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Peter Jennings that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his "fair share." Finally, the EEOC drafts the "Economic Equity and Anti-Grasshopper Act," retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government. Hillary gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of federal judges that Bill appointed from a list of welfare recipients. The ant loses the case. The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he doesn't maintain it. The ant has disappeared in the snow. The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood. There is no constitutional authority for the federal government to act as the "fat police" or to spend billions of our hard-earned extorted tax dollars to buy up private lands in the name of getting more people outdoors. Letting government bureaucrats grab more land is never the avenue to achieving more freedom. The history of government-controlled land has been one of betrayal to ranchers, gun owners, sportsmen, and those who cherish freedom. The trend has been to close off more and more U.S. government-controlled lands to anyone but unarmed hikers who are prey to carnivores, and worse, under the unconstitutional United Nation's-enabled International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), the development and promotion of the UNESCO-sponsored Man and Biosphere Program (MAB), the UN's World Heritage Convention, Convention on Biological Diversity, and Convention on Desertification, all, by grace of misled U.S. politicians, are labeling U.S. park lands as U.N. lands, and are creating human-restricted wild lands as part of the new-age philosophy of the United Nations Earth Charter. I implore you to vote against and debate against H.R. 4100 as well as against all unconstitutional land-revoking laws, regulations, and policy for which the U.S.A. has implemented. Please let me know your plan of action for my request. I look forward to receiving your reply. HB 2403 To Pennsylvania Representatives: Vote NO on Pa. H.B. 2403 May 20, 2004 Dear , Pennsylvania House Bill 2403 is an anti-gun abomination. In the name of "political correctness," this bill would allow ex parte ("star chamber") protective orders to be entered against a defendant by anyone in a "dating relationship" (sections 6108 (a) (7) (i) (A) and 6102). Defendants would be required to turn in their firearms within 24 hours (section 6108 (a) (7) (i) (A)) -- without any immediate right to appeal - and to pay for the privilege of having their guns seized. A defendant would not have to violate the court's order to be sent away to prison for six months. If he just "engag[ed] in a pattern of practice that [the court finds] indicates continued risk of harm," he could be imprisoned for up to six months. And the defendant is explicitly prohibited from receiving a jury trial before being sent to jail (section 6113.1 (b) (3)). Surely, this fundamental lack of due process should offend even the politically correct. Please vote against this unconstitutional outrage. Let me know your intended action on this matter. I look forward to receiving your reply. Sincerely, ACTION: Contact Your Representatives: http://fp.users.fast.net/InfoQuest/government.htm#CONGRESS
