(with IQ* Solution!) The Hard Line Slaves for Leviathan By R. Cort Kirkwood September 24, 2002 (AgapePress) - Next time someone waxes poetic about the "land of the free," tell him to put a sock in it. Americans are not free; we are slaves, ever toiling to feed the appetite of Leviathan. That is the upshot of a recent budget report from The Heritage Foundation. The think tank says spending in Washington hasn't just gone up considerably. It hasn't just "skyrocketed," to use the cliché. It has increased to a degree almost beyond human comprehension. Federal spending, to put it mildly, is insane. The Details The total for 2000-2003 is $800 billion more than between 1996-1999, about $5,006 more per family. That figure is nearly $75,000, and only during World War II was it higher. As anyone familiar with government would suspect, nearly all of this spending is unconstitutional; i.e., it funds programs unforeseen by the men who wrote the Constitution and drew the plans for our self-governing Republic. The Agriculture Department, a gargantuan trough to buy votes from farmers, will spend $117 billion before fiscal 2003 is over, up from $57 billion for the years 1996-1999. That's a 106% increase. Not to be outdone, the Education Department, Jimmy Carter's payola to the National Education Association for supporting his presidential campaign, jumped from $128 billion to $170 billion over the same period, a 32% increase. What ever happened to the GOP plan to abolish this bureaucratic cancer? Health spending: $127 billion to $190 billion, a 50% increase. Who knew we were that sick? The Heritage Foundation tendered some esoteric excuses for the metastasizing growth, such as the rise of discretionary versus entitlement spending, but the excuses never get at the naked truth. Aggrandizing State Power Politicians raise taxes to increase spending to redistribute wealth to purchase votes. Every nickel we give to the state -- or should we say, every nickel the state's crooked boodlers steal from us -- diminishes our liberty. It augments the power of the taxers, the parasitic class of politicians and bureaucrats, over the taxed, meaning you and me. At best it was called socialism; at worst, tyranny. Then it became liberalism. Now it peregrinates as "compassionate conservatism," and we all know the most compassionate conservative of them all. Perhaps more frightening than the utter enormity of these data, so mind-boggling they numb the senses, is that no one said a word while the larceny was in progress. Anyone remember the Congress or president asking for a tax increase of $5,000 per family? Why should we? Americans never complain about the thievery anyway. Indeed, after learning the extent of such plunder, we merely vote the same politicians back into office. Then, we hasten to claim we descended from the men who tossed tea into Boston Harbor, or from Washington and Jefferson, Madison and Henry or Randolph and Lee. Who, exactly, are we kidding? What We Deserve The American people aren't just asleep; we're comatose. Any people who will not riot in the streets, who will not march on the Capitol, who will not tar and feather the politicians, when the latter lift taxes by $5,000 per family, do not deserve liberty. Instead, we deserve exactly what we get: the chains of excessive taxation, authoritarian bureaucracy, and an incorrigible political elite. --- R. All that is needed to stop unconstitutional spending is a simple majority of the House, 218 Representatives, standing tall on the principles of the United States Constitution and voting against all unconstitutional spending. Bluey CNSNews.com Staff Writer January 13, 2003 http://www.cnsnews.com/ForeignBureaus/archive/200301/FOR20030113a.html (CNSNews.com) - Handgun-related crimes are up sharply in England and Wales despite strict gun-control measures that were implemented in the late 1990s, according to statistics released by the British government last week. Crimes involving guns jumped 35 percent in the yearlong survey, while the use of handguns -- already illegal -- rose 46 percent. Gun-control laws in the United Kingdom are some of the strictest in the world, but gun-related crimes have increased annually since a ban on handguns was imposed after the Dunblane Primary School massacre in 1996. Sixteen students and a teacher were left dead in the shooting. Overall, crime rose slightly more than 9 percent in England and Wales, but violence stemming from guns soared the most. There were nearly 10,000 incidents involving firearms, including 97 gun-related murders and 558 serious causalities. Pro-gun groups in the United States attributed the rise in crime to the government's restrictions on firearms. But British lawmakers immediately moved to tighten those laws last week, imposing a mandatory five-year prison sentence on anyone found carrying a handgun. Home Secretary David Blunkett announced the new punishment last Monday, and then following a Friday summit released other initiatives, including an amnesty program that will allow citizens to hand in guns to police. http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewCulture.asp?Page=\Culture\archive\200301\CUL20030 113a.html "While we already have some of the toughest gun laws in the world, there has been an unacceptable increase in the flagrant use of guns in crime across the country," Blunkett said in a statement, noting that the new mandatory sentence will send criminals a clear message. But National Rifle Association spokesman Ted Novin said as long as British citizens remain defenseless and unable to protect themselves, gun-related violence will likely increase. "The street gangs and the criminals there don't bother paying attention to any of the laws," Novin said. "So when the British government institutes laws that effect someone's right to have a gun for protection, the criminals are left with the guns and the law-abiding citizens are left defenseless." The Conservative opposition in Britain called the crime report "terrible" and chided the government for making careless decisions that have led to the spike in gun-related violence. Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats said the statistics demonstrate the need for stricter gun-control measures. Gun Owners of America spokesman Erich Pratt said some states and cities in the United States have taken an approach similar to the United Kingdom, only to find that crime almost always increases. "We've seen the same thing in this country," he said. "In Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles -- wherever firearms have been strictly curtailed, inevitably there's an increase in crime because people can no longer defend themselves."
