Medical workers face military draft Posted: July 25, 2003 http://wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=33754 The Pentagon will draft experienced medical personnel, including medics, nurses and physicians, in the event of a national emergency. The "health care personnel delivery system" is being readied by the Department of Defense, according to a report published by the Newhouse News Service, to cope with military casualties from a large-scale biological or chemical attack. The plan was authorized by Congress in 1987 to deal with large-scale casualties that outstripped the active-duty military's ability to handle them. The news service also reported the Pentagon is considering other "special skills" drafts, to include military linguists, computer experts or engineers, that could arise from other immediate needs. "We're going to elevate that kind of draft to be a priority," Lewis Brodsky, acting director of the Selective Service System, told Newhouse News Service. The plan calls for the president to issue a proclamation ordering 13.5 million health-care professionals to register for a draft within 13 days. Following the proclamation, Congress would quickly pass legislation authorizing the draft of health-care workers aged 20-44, and for the first time in U.S. history, the draft would include women. the draft would include women. The Pentagon would then inform the Selective Service System of the number of personnel needed for each of the 62 medical specialties. The news service said a separate draft lottery would be held for each specialty. The Defense Department believes it could draft up to 80,000 personnel - surgeons, dentists, nurses, X-ray personnel, paramedics, etc. - within several months of the draft through the Military Entrance Processing Command. The news service said the plan, however, isn't well-known among the medical community. "If you were to ask 10 doctors, maybe one might have heard something about it," Dr. Marybeth McCall, chief medical officer at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., and an Air Force veteran, told the news service. Ron Paul, R-Texas, introduced a bill in the House to eliminate the Selective Service System and the Selective Service Act. Asked why Paul introduced the legislation, spokesman Jeff Deist said Paul "is certainly opposed to the draft in any way, shape or form." "Philosophically, conscription is not something that a free society, in our view, ought to abide," he said, because it "forces a young person to go somewhere against their will." Deist said the problem with a draft, or even the mechanism to implement a draft, lies in giving the federal government a tool with which to send young people off to fight in wars that may have little or no bearing on U.S. national security. He said Paul was "very aware" of Congress' authority to "raise and support armies," but that the SSS elimination bill would do nothing to inhibit that power. And, in the event that the U.S. were ever attacked, Deist said a draft "wouldn't be an issue" because Americans' sense of duty would cause millions to volunteer. "If the threat is real and it's in our self-interests, then I imagine people would go voluntarily," he said. It's not water weight either. My wife even noticed. My double-chin has disappeared. I've kept my goatee-beard since I gained weight after marriage, and now my Honey is asking for me to shave it off - she's always preferred the clean-cut look - I've grown a bit attached to my goatee-beard but I'll do the honorable thing once I get down to my preferred weight ;-) My Opa (grandfather) always said that once I hit the 30's, I'd get "thick in the middle." Well, I've lost over an inch so far! I've slowed a bit in the weight loss. I haven't taken the vitamin/mineral supplement that's supposed to aid in the weight loss, so I might do that later. I'm told that exercise dramatically improves the weight loss (all I've done is 100 daily sit-ups). I need to get my slowly-shrinking buttocks down to the basement and dust off my old weight bench. Don't know about you, but I know I feel better when I feel my muscles tone up (having wrestled throughout most of my youth, I often feel the pang to get back into shape). I bought the Atkins Recipe book. WOW! Great dishes that can be prepared in under 30 minutes (just my speed!). These are real gourmet dishes. I never thought that putting some oregano and dry mustard in an omelet would taste great! I also count my carbs enough to treat myself. At our son's baby dedication party, I helped myself to a few dark chocolate-covered strawberries. The way I see it, you've got to enjoy the good stuff once in a while!
